It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of John Challis, actor and great friend of The Lizard Lifeboat Station.
John, also know to us all as “Boycie” from the evergreen tv programme “Only Fools and Horses” became part of our Lizard Station RNLI lives back in 2009/10 when he agreed to become an Ambassador for The Lizard Lifeboat Station Charity Appeal aiming to help us in the appeal for which we as a station had to raise £3000,000 (or more!) toward our expected and hoped for brand new Tamar Class Lifeboat.
He immediately took on the role with great purpose and intent and never stopped “dropping our name” into any conversation in his public life! He managed to take time out from his busy acting/work schedule to join is in 2012 at our naming ceremony. There is no doubt he helped us to raise and then surpass the sum required and for this John we will be forever be grateful.
Our photographs show John as he feels the first pull of the lifeboat as she heads down the slipway sheer excitement is clear!! And afterward in the crew room with Coxswain Phil Burgess receiving his certificate. In Johns own words “amazing, better than I ever thought it could be” and looking slightly bemused if not a little shell shocked by the experience too John!
You also see some of the crew surprising John while he was at his latest book signing in Waterstones Book Store in Truro in 2013. He had dedicated this particular book to The Lizard Lifeboat Station. He was really surprised and thrilled to see us but that is just the way John was – a truly genuine gentleman and we all were honoured to have been able to call him our friend.
R.I.P John from us all ….
