The Lizard Lifeboat

Welcome Coxswain Dan

All at The Lizard Lifeboat Station offer our warmest congratulations to Dan Atkinson, erstwhile Mechanic of The Lizard Lifeboat RNLB Rose and who is now her proud Coxswain!

Dan began his RNLI career in his home town Fowey in 1997 where he joined Fowey Lifeboat Station as a volunteer, first as a crew member of the inshore D-class boat progressing to ALB Waveney and then ALB Trent.  In 2002 Dan moved on to Humber RNLI where in 2003 he attained the position of Assistant Mechanic. In 2007 Dan became full-time Pilot Crew aboard ABP Humber.

In 2009 we were lucky enough to secure Dan’s services as Mechanic of The Lizard Lifeboat. He worked at first with Coxswain Phil Burgess aboard RNLB David Robinson and secondly with Coxswain Andrew Putt aboard the current Lizard Lifeboat RNLB Rose.

Throughout the demolition of the old boathouse, and the re-building of the current boathouse at Kilcobben and with no home for the lifeboat to go to (although the new boathouse was nearing  completion ahead of schedule) Dan and Phil spent the last months of Phil’s tenure, and the beginning of newly appointed Coxswain Andrew Putt’s service, ferrying the crews of RNLB David Robinson and latterly RNLB Rose, between the 2 or 3 (depending on the weather) afloat moorings at Cadgwith and The Lizard’s Polpeor. Naturally there was no possibility of the lifeboat not being on service at any time during this period.

So after wishing Andrew farewell and a happy retirement another era in our proud history begins, with all of us at the Lizard Lifeboat Station extending good wishes to Dan and his family for a long,  and continuing successful association,  now as Coxswain of The Lizard Lifeboat …..
